Disposal of Medical Waste requires significant costs and regulatory compliance:

Contaminated waste (e.g. gloves, scrubs, sharps, etc. with blood or other bodily fluids) are stored in containers that are then delivered to specialized autoclave facilities in carts

The door is shut and the autoclave then delivers steam in excess of 300 F for at least an hour, which sterilizes the waste.

The waste is then packaged and delivered to the landfill for disposal. Many facilities also include shredding of the waste prior to landfill.

This requires handling from the hospital to the autoclave facility, handling in and out of the autoclave, and handling to the landfill. Each touch adds to the handling and labor cost, as well as tracking paperwork.

The constant use of energy is required for the sterilization process (in addition to the energy required for transport)
